The upcoming annual spring renewal spurs many of us to throw open our windows and start scrubbing our floors - but this motivation can quickly burn out with too many tasks to do, leaving us wondering where our plans went wrong. One tip from my home to yours is to schedule different rooms each weekend, taking a look at the goals in that room - consider creating a checklist for each room, including specific items (dust items on walls, dust lights, wipe down baseboards, etcetera). It's useful for my family to ensure everything is getting done with four workers, and some people especially benefit from physically crossing items off of lists.

Need to tidy up first, saving motivation and making the cleaning process faster and easier? Request Organization Pending's Pre-Spring Cleaning Tips, delivered directly to your email!

Declutter for a Cause Month

February is Declutter for a Cause Month! Sometimes, knowing our donations can be used elsewhere in the community can make the difference between us wanting to hang on to things "just in case", or our ability to let these items have a new life.

Take a look at Organization Pending's Community Recommendations page under Decluttering and Donation for a quick list of local donation options that support local foster families, veterans, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, local refugee and immigrant families, and more. Contact Organization Pending if you have a favorite local donation resource that's not listed! This resource is updated regularly.

Need a place to start decluttering? Think small! Break down a room into individual drawers, cabinets, or furniture pieces, and start by only looking for trash. Don't forget to take before and after pictures - the time stamps will help you gauge how long future projects might take, and remind you of how much progress you've already made!

National Secondhand Wardrobe Week is February 2-10! A fun decluttering motivation tip is to pair scheduled decluttering sessions with specific purposes - like using this week as motivation to clear your closet, letting others enjoy items you're no longer reaching for.

Organization Pending's Top Three Closet Decluttering Tips
  1. "Shop" your closet! Many clients find this practice to be a great way to jump into decluttering before or instead of removing everything. Look at each item on the rack - would you still buy that if you saw it in a store today?

  2. Do you have seasonal clothing? Consider packing these items away in the off seasons, using under-the-bed storage or bins - and don't forget about coats and other outdoor clothing!

  3. Do you wear specific clothing for work, at home, and going out? Zone your clothing options so you only have part of your total wardrobe to consider for specific purposes. After putting these zones into categories, you might be surprised to learn how many similar items you own - letting you know to declutter some of those options, or letting you know to embrace your favorite style and donate the rest.

Have clothing that is torn or stained? Broken jewelry? Whole clothing you want to go to a good cause? Organization Pending will pick these items up for free during National Secondhand Wardrobe Week, benefitting Columbus Fashion Academy through our partnership! Contact Tabi for pick up.
